An online encyclopedia we build together

zukan.com is an encyclopedia platform that gathers images and knowledge scattered across the web, organizes them by subject, and shares them. It brings together people’s original images and curated photos and videos from around the world, adding value by organizing them within a single classification system.

Our vision

We want to bring the photos, videos, and knowledge scattered across the web and people’s computers into a single classification tree: an encyclopedia that endures as a shared resource for humanity, with a place for everyone to contribute.

This is the world zukan.com envisions.

Rethinking how we organize and search the web

In the early days of the internet, the Yahoo! Directory helped people navigate the web through a hierarchy of categories maintained by people. But it could not keep up with the rapid growth in websites and was eventually overtaken by Google’s algorithmic search.

Today, as much information is published and consumed in a day as in an entire year a decade ago. Google Search, too, is no longer a complete answer. When only the top 10 sites on a results page matter and the rest are effectively invisible, the limits of search become clear. Human-curated collections and websites have once again taken on a major role.

By helping people collect, classify, and make sense of overwhelming amounts of information, zukan.com aims to bring decisive innovation to images and video within this broader shift from algorithms to human curation.
